Story · Strategyzer's Two-Half Puzzle
After Business Model Generation, Alex Osterwalder and his team kept seeing the same kind of failure: teams polishing features they thought were cool, then shipping to silence — because nobody had seriously asked what the customer was actually trying to get done. So they drew a two-half puzzle. The right half is the square: the customer's real world (jobs, pains, gains). The left half is the circle: our offer (pain relievers, gain creators). The whole point of the canvas is to force you to snap the halves together: does each reliever actually land on a real pain? Does each gain creator actually deliver a gain the customer wanted? Connect them and you have fit — and value. Skip the alignment, and even the slickest feature is just self-indulgence.

The Canvas in the Real World

Customer profile: spell out the jobs, pains and gains first, then rank them by importance. Never start with your own feature list.
Value map: every pain reliever should point at a real pain; every gain creator at a real gain. Anything that points nowhere goes on the question pile.
Unmet pains: a pain with no line crossing to it is the most valuable opportunity — competitors haven't solved it either, which is exactly the wedge.
Self-indulgent features: anything on the left that connects to no pain or gain is waste, no matter how polished — cut it.
一句话In One Line
The longer a product team works, the easier it is to slide into "we think this feature is cool" and forget to ask what the customer is actually trying to get done. The brutal gift of the Value Proposition Canvas is that it puts both halves on the table and forces you to draw the lines — and the moment you do, the truth shows itself: which features genuinely hit the customer's pains and desires (fit), which are just self-flattery (waste), and which pains still sit there unanswered (opportunities). Value was never measured by "how many features, how clever" — only by "does it line up with the customer's jobs, pains and gains". Understand and rank the right side first, then look back at the left. The features worth cutting and the opportunities worth filling are written, in plain sight, in every dotted line that fails to connect.
Common Mistakes
Filling in features on the left first, then hunting for pains to justify them. Always start from the customer profile on the right — the value map exists to serve it.
Listing pains and gains flat, with no ranking. Rank them by severity and desire — align against the most painful and most wanted first.
Drawing every link from inside the team's head, never from the customer. The customer profile has to come from real interviews and observation, not conference-room guessing.
