Origin Story · The Good Product Killed by Anxiety
JTBD researchers Bob Moesta and Chris Spiek kept asking real people why they bought what they bought, and the same pattern showed up every time: behind every switch sit four forces. Two push you forward — frustration with the old (push) and attraction of the new (pull). Two pin you in place — the habit of what you already do and the anxiety of the unknown. They interviewed dozens of home buyers. The new house was bigger, brighter, perfect (pull pegged at max), and yet buyers stalled for months. What blocked them was "moving is a nightmare" (habit) and "what if we picked the wrong place?" (anxiety). Smart sellers learned the lesson: stop pitching how great the new house is and start hauling away the old furniture, throwing in a no-questions-asked guarantee, and arranging the movers — chip the anxiety and habit away, piece by piece. The counter-intuitive takeaway: plenty of good products don't lose on attraction — they lose because nobody bothered to dismantle the buyer's fear.

Four Forces, Each Pulling Its Own Way

推力(Push) Push (of the current situation)
Frustration with what they already have. The more the old solution irritates them, the harder it pushes — "this stupid software crashed again" is push in its purest form.
拉力(Pull) Pull (of the new solution)
The attraction of the new offering. Features, reputation, vision — the more tempting it looks, the harder it pulls. This is the part every seller loves to talk about.
惯性(Habit) Habit (of the present)
The comfort of what they already do. Migration cost, learning curve, the warm chair of the status quo — "what we have works well enough" is habit talking.
(Anxiety) Anxiety (of the new)
Fear the new will let them down, fear they'll get burned, fear of looking foolish. The most ignored of the four — and the cheapest one to dismantle.

Four Forces in the Wild

The switching decision: buying is the net result of all four forces pulling at once. Smart sellers add (push + pull) and subtract (habit + anxiety) at the same time — not just shout louder about the upside.
Push & Pull: amplify the pain of the old, sharpen the promise of the new. Necessary, but on their own rarely enough to move a buyer over the line.
Lower the switching cost: one-click migration, free trial, keep their old data — kill habit at the root by making the switch feel weightless.
Defuse anxiety: money-back guarantee, customer proof, progressive onboarding — anxiety is the cheapest force to dismantle, which makes it the highest-ROI lever you have.
一句话In One Line
Sellers' instinct is to keep adding — pitch the product harder (pull), trash the competition more (push). The four-forces model makes it plain: no matter how big push and pull get, if habit and anxiety add up to more, the customer still won't move. And those two "stay put" forces are the most overlooked — and the cheapest to dismantle: one-click migration kills habit, a no-questions refund kills anxiety. Cheap to deploy, immediate in effect. So the operators who actually move customers don't just add — they subtract. They ask first, "Why isn't the customer switching?" and pull the invisible resistance apart, thread by thread. Tape this to the wall: making customers feel safe to switch beats making the product sound better, almost every time.
Common Mistakes
Pouring everything into push and pull, ignoring habit and anxiety. Even maxed-out pull can't beat a bigger habit + anxiety stack. You have to subtract while you add.
Treating habit and anxiety as the same thing. Habit yields to lower switching cost; anxiety yields to social proof and refunds. The two need completely different playbooks.
Using a price cut as the universal answer. Price is just one slice of pull and does nothing for anxiety — someone afraid of getting burned doesn't relax just because the burn got cheaper.
