Walter Shewhart 在 1920 年代发明控制图时,核心判据只有一条:点出了 ±3σ 控制限就报警。
可现场工程师很快发现:有些过程明明所有点都在界内,图形却「不对劲」 —— 一连串点都在中心线同一侧,
或者像爬楼梯一样稳步上升。这些都是系统性变异的指纹,但单条出界规则看不见它们。
1984 年,Lloyd S. Nelson 把多年积累的经验法则系统化为 8 条判异规则,
每一条都针对一种「非随机」图形:超界、偏移、趋势、周期、贴边、紧贴中心……
从此控制图不再只有一只眼睛盯着边界,而是用八只眼睛同时审视图形的随机性。这就是现代 SPC 软件默认的 Nelson 规则集。
When Walter Shewhart invented the control chart in the 1920s, he gave it one rule: signal whenever a point lands outside the ±3σ limits.
Shop-floor engineers quickly noticed something odd — some processes had every point inside the limits and yet the picture just felt wrong:
a long run of points all on one side, or a staircase trending steadily up. Those are the fingerprints of special-cause variation, but the out-of-limits rule alone is blind to them.
In 1984 Lloyd S. Nelson codified years of practitioner experience into 8 detection rules, each targeting a specific "non-random" pattern:
out of limits, shift, trend, cycling, hugging the limits, hugging the centerline — and so on.
From that day forward a control chart no longer watched the boundary with a single eye; it scanned for randomness with eight eyes at once. That's the Nelson rule set every modern SPC tool ships by default.

规则1 · 超界:1 点落在 3σ 之外。最经典的出界报警。
Rule 1 · Out of limits: 1 point beyond 3σ. The classic out-of-limits alarm.
规则2 · 偏移:连续 9 点落在中心线同一侧。均值漂移了。
Rule 2 · Shift: 9 in a row on the same side of the centerline. The mean has shifted.
规则3 · 趋势:连续 6 点持续递增或递减。刀具磨损式漂移。
Rule 3 · Trend: 6 in a row steadily increasing or decreasing. Classic tool-wear drift.
规则4 · 震荡:连续 14 点上下交替。两套系统轮替的信号。
Rule 4 · Oscillation: 14 in a row alternating up and down. Two systems taking turns.
规则5 · 2/3 贴 2σ:3 点中有 2 点落在同侧 2σ 之外。
Rule 5 · 2 of 3 beyond 2σ: 2 out of any 3 consecutive points fall beyond 2σ on the same side.
规则6 · 4/5 贴 1σ:5 点中有 4 点落在同侧 1σ 之外。
Rule 6 · 4 of 5 beyond 1σ: 4 out of any 5 consecutive points fall beyond 1σ on the same side.
规则7 · 紧贴中心:连续 15 点都在 ±1σ 内。变异异常小(分层)。
Rule 7 · Hugging the center: 15 in a row all within ±1σ. Variation suspiciously small (often a stratified subgroup).
规则8 · 远离中心:连续 8 点都在 ±1σ 之外(任意侧)。
Rule 8 · Avoiding the center: 8 in a row all beyond ±1σ (either side). A mixture of two distributions.
3 现实里的 Nelson 规则 Nelson Rules in the Real World
SPC 判异:Minitab、JMP 等软件默认内置 Nelson 8 规则,勾选即生效,是车间报警的标准配置。
SPC detection: Minitab, JMP and the like ship Nelson's 8 rules out of the box — tick the box and you've got the shop-floor alarm standard.
模式识别:趋势=刀具磨损/温升,周期=班次/环境波动,偏移=换料换批 —— 每种图形对应一类根因。
Pattern recognition: trend = tool wear or thermal rise; cycle = shift change or environment; shift = new lot or material — each pattern points to a class of root cause.
超越出界点:规则 2-8 能在点出界之前预警,给现场抢出调整时间,把缺陷扼杀在萌芽。
Beyond the out-of-limits point: rules 2–8 fire before a point ever crosses the limit, buying the operator time to adjust and killing defects in the cradle.
误报权衡:开的规则越多,灵敏度越高,但虚警率也升 —— 关键工序多开,一般工序只用规则 1-4。
False-alarm trade-off: more rules = higher sensitivity but also higher false-alarm rate — turn on the full set for critical processes, stick with rules 1–4 for routine ones.
一句话In One Line
一个真正受控的过程,它的控制图应该是「无聊」的:点在中心线两侧随机乱跳,
没有连续同侧、没有楼梯式趋势、没有规整的锯齿。Nelson 8 规则的本质,是把「图形看起来太规整」翻译成可计算的判据 ——
规整 = 有系统性原因。出界(规则1)只是最刺眼的一种,
而偏移、趋势、震荡这些界内异常往往出现得更早、更隐蔽。
所以高手看控制图,从不只问「出界没有」,而是问「这图形够不够随机」 —— 这才是 SPC 的精髓。
A genuinely in-control process should produce a boring control chart: points bouncing randomly on both sides of the centerline,
no runs on one side, no staircase trend, no tidy zig-zag. Nelson's 8 rules are nothing more than the formal translation of "this picture looks too tidy" into testable criteria —
tidy = special-cause. The out-of-limits signal (rule 1) is just the most glaring of the eight,
while shifts, trends, and oscillations — the inside-the-limits anomalies — usually show up earlier and stealthier.
That's why seasoned engineers never ask only "did anything go out?" — they ask "is this picture random enough?" That is the heart of SPC.
常见误用Common Mistakes
只看规则1,没出界就放心。偏移、趋势在出界前早已报警,规则 2-8 才是早期预警的价值所在。
Only watching rule 1 and breathing easy as long as no point is out of limits. Shifts and trends raise the alarm long before any limit is crossed — rules 2–8 are where the early-warning value lives.
8 条规则全开还层层加码。规则越多虚警越高,按工序重要性取舍,常用 1-4 即可。
Turning on all 8 rules and stacking even more on top. More rules = more false alarms; pick the set that matches the process risk — rules 1–4 usually carry the day.
控制限用规格限来画。Nelson 规则建立在 ±3σ 自然控制限上,混用规格限会让所有判据失效。
