Origin Story · The 8 Minutes from Google's Design Sprint
Jake Knapp at Google Ventures kept noticing the same thing while running design sprints with startup teams: ask people to "just brainstorm" and they freeze up or get politely bland — half an hour later still nothing usable.
So he changed the rule — fold the page into 8, one minute per box, fill them all.
The moment time started biting, magic happened: the first boxes were mediocre, but ideas got wilder the further you went, because the brain literally didn't have time to mutter "that's stupid".
The point of Crazy 8s isn't pretty drawings — it's using extreme time pressure to bypass the inner critic that loves to shoot ideas down.
The whole drill rides on one belief: if you want one good idea, first get a lot of ideas.

X-axis is which sketch number you're on; Y-axis is its freshness. The first one or two are usually clichés (anyone could land them). Real breakthroughs tend to arrive after sketch #3 — that's exactly why you have to push through all 8.
8 Crazy 8s in the Real World
Fast divergence: before a solution review, each person runs Crazy 8s. Dozens of candidates hit the table in minutes — no one locks in a single direction too early.
Silence the inner critic: when the clock is brutal, there's no time to be picky. The "that's stupid" voice has to shut up — sketch first, judge later.
Quantity → quality: great ideas are panned out of a heap of okay ones. Secure the quantity first and the quality surfaces on its own.
Design Sprint:Google
Design Sprint: the centerpiece of Day 2 in Google's five-day sprint — everyone sketches solo, then the team votes to converge.
一句话In One Line
Creativity's biggest enemy isn't the lack of inspiration — it's the censor in your head who critiques every idea the instant it appears and kills it on the spot.
The Crazy 8s trick: use absurd time pressure to crowd that censor out. You have to finish a sketch in 60 seconds — there's literally no time to be picky.
So the brain reaches for the weird, far-flung, normally-off-limits associations, and fresh ideas finally get to surface.
Remember: in the divergence phase don't chase "good" — chase "many". Save judgment for later.
Common Mistakes
Critiquing each sketch as you draw it. In divergence, just fill all 8 boxes — judgment belongs to the convergence phase later.
Trying to make each sketch polished. Stick figures are plenty — Crazy 8s is a contest of ideas, not draftsmanship.
Skipping the timer and "taking your time". Strict 1 minute per box — that pressure is exactly what shuts down the censor and squeezes out the good stuff.
