Story · A Checklist for the Brain
Bob Eberle
In 1953, ad man Alex Osborn — the father of brainstorming — sketched out a list of prompts engineered to pry creativity loose. In 1971, educator Bob Eberle
packed them into a mnemonic: SCAMPER. The insight underneath is counter-intuitive: creativity isn't a visit from a muse — it's what good questions drag out of you.
Brains are lazy. Stare at a suitcase and you'll only ever ask "how do I make a tougher suitcase?" But the moment someone forces you to ask "what if I combined it with something else?",
"wheels" pops out. Push you to ask "could it be put to a different use?" and you start picturing it as a boarding-gate stool.
SCAMPER doesn't promise every verb yields gold — it promises you won't miss a single angle. Take one old thing and squeeze it, systematically, until there isn't a drop left.
1 SCAMPER 七棱镜 The SCAMPER Seven-Prism

Someone actually shipped this
SCAMPER SCAMPER in the Wild
Idea ignition: no waiting on a muse — a prompt list does the spark-plug work. Anyone on the team can run it.
Breaking defaults: "Eliminate" and "Reverse" are the cure for "but it has to be that way" — they make you rip out the assumption you didn't know you held.
The seven verbs: S Substitute / C Combine / A Adapt / M Modify / P Put-to-other-use / E Eliminate / R Reverse. Skip one and you blind yourself to that angle.
Recombinant innovation: "Combine" is the highest-yield verb. Wheels + suitcase. Phone + camera + music player. New species are almost always old parts in a new arrangement.
一句话In One Line
The human brain has one fatal flaw at ideation: it only thinks along familiar directions. The longer you push, the narrower it gets, until you're trapped in "faster, cheaper, sturdier" forever.
SCAMPER's whole trick is using seven fixed verbs to wrench your attention onto seven directions you'd never have looked at.
It doesn't generate ideas for you. It asks the right questions for you — and great ideas almost always hide inside a question you've never asked.
The two highest-value verbs are Combine and Reverse: the first gave us the wheeled bag and the smartphone; the second gave us reverse auctions and the subscription model.
Remember: great ideas aren't a gift — they're what a good checklist squeezes out of an old object.
Common Mistakes
Cherry-picking the easy verbs — usually Substitute and Modify. Run all seven. The killer idea almost always lives inside Eliminate or Reverse — the two verbs you were too lazy to try.
Treating it as a judging panel and shooting down weird ideas on contact. During ideation chase volume, not quality — the absurd ideas are the stepping stones to the good ones.
Running SCAMPER on thin air with no concrete object. SCAMPER is a remix tool — you need a real, existing thing to point the prisms at.
