Story · The User Doesn't Want a Drill
Theodore Levitt's famous line: "People don't want a quarter-inch drill; they want a quarter-inch hole." But keep asking — why the hole? To hang a picture. Why the picture? To make the home feel warm. Why? Because they just moved in and are aching for a sense of belonging. See it? The ask is "drill"; the real longing is "belonging". Toyota's 5 Whys drills into why a machine stopped; design thinking turns the same tool on people: each "why" digs one layer deeper into the user's heart, until the emotion and longing that actually drive their behavior surface. Stop too shallow and you'll just build a better drill — drill to the bottom and you realize they wanted a home.

Motive Drill Chain: From Mouth to Heart

Click "why" to drill down

Stop at Ask vs Drill to Motive

If you stop at the surface ask
The real need once you reach the motive

Motive Drill-Down in Practice

Motive mining: users report what they want; five whys reveal why they want it — and only the why should drive design.
Ask vs motive: the ask is a proposed solution ("make it faster"); the motive is the underlying longing ("I want to feel safe"). Never mistake a solution for a need.
Empathic drilling: each "why" is an act of empathy — head into the user's context, worries, and feelings, not into technical parameters.
User research: in interviews, follow up with "and then what?", "why?", "what does that mean to you?" — let users surface the motive in their own words.
一句话In One Line
Same name, different target. Lean's 5 Whys drills a machine: why did it stop? fuse blew → overload → no lubrication → no maintenance plan. The endpoint is a fixable process. Design thinking drills a person: why do you want it? anxiety → fear → longing. The endpoint is a feeling the user could never quite name. The most dangerous move is taking the user's first sentence (the ask) and building it as the requirement. People are great at proposing solutions; they're terrible at explaining why they need them. The whole point of 5 Whys is to force you to not stop at layer one — drill a few more layers and "build a faster website" becomes "stop them from being afraid of missing out". That's where design actually starts to move people.
Common Mistakes
Treating the user's first sentence as the actual need and building straight from it. The ask is the user's proposed solution — keep drilling to uncover the motive underneath.
Stopping at the machine or process root cause the way lean would. In design thinking the destination is the user's emotion and longing — motive, not mechanism.
Mechanically forcing exactly five whys, or turning the conversation into an interrogation. "Five" is a reminder not to stop too shallow — drill until you hit the real motive, and keep the whole conversation empathic.
