Origin Story · The Copier Covered in Sticky Notes
Xerox hired anthropologists to sit in real offices and just watch. They found something no survey would ever surface: employees defeated by the copier UI were covering the machine in handwritten sticky notes to teach each other.
Nobody would ever write "I can't understand the control panel" on a feedback form — but their behavior spelled it out loud and clear.
That's the power of field work: go to where the work actually happens and watch what people do, not just what they say.
Even so, raw notes are just fragments. The real value is in sensemaking — pooling "sticky notes," "trial-and-error," and "asking a colleague" into one cluster and distilling the insight:
"The interface is too hard for ordinary users; we need task-based onboarding from scratch." Seeing the need no one names takes both steps.

Field Work in the Wild
Ethnography: immerse yourself in the user's real context the way an anthropologist would — understand the culture and situation behind the behavior, not just Q&A from a distance.
On-site observation: go into the kitchen and watch people cook, go onto the shop floor and watch operators run the line — the workarounds people invent in the real environment expose design gaps better than anything else.
Latent needs: needs the customer can't articulate and may not even notice — hidden in habits, detours, and tolerated compromises. Only observation catches them.
From notes to insights: a pile of notes is not an insight. Sensemaking pulls fragments into patterns, then lifts patterns into the「所以然」 — the why behind it all.
一句话
In One Line
What people say and what they do rarely line up — not because they're lying, but because most needs live below conscious awareness.
Surveys and interviews only catch what gets said; field work catches what gets done — the sticky-noted machines, the detours, the resigned shrugs.
That's where the real latent need lives. But observation isn't the finish line. A pile of notes without sensemaking is just noise.
Cluster first to let patterns surface, then keep asking "what does this mean?" — that's how fragments lift into insight. See it, then read it; observation gives you the facts, sensemaking gives you the direction.
Common Mistakes
Sending out surveys without going on-site, trusting that what customers say is the truth. Go watch them do the work — behavior sits much closer to the real need than words do.
Observing with a conclusion already in hand — you'll only see what you came to see. Suspend your hypotheses, record faithfully, and let the pattern emerge from the data on its own.
Mistaking a pile of notes for an insight. Notes ≠ insight — you have to cluster and run sensemaking to distill the 所以然 / the underlying why.
