Story · "Don't you think the new feature is great?"
A product manager walks into an interview clutching the new design and leads with: "Don't you think the new feature is great?"
The customer, being polite, nods: "Yeah, it's nice." The PM goes back and writes the report: "Users broadly endorse the new feature."
Three months later it ships, and almost no one uses it — because "it's nice" was never the customer's thought, it was the PM's thought, fed back to him.
That is the trap of the leading question: the answer is hidden inside the question, and the customer simply hands you back what your hint suggested.
Reframe it open: "How do you usually handle this today?" — and you stand a chance of hearing the real answer, sharp edges and all.
An interview is not there to confirm what you already think. It's there to surface what you didn't know to think of. Phrasing decides whether you hear the truth or an echo.

Question Techniques in Practice
Open-ended phrasing: lead with "Could you tell me about…" or "What was that like?" — let the customer narrate. Stories are where the real scene, emotion, and pain live.
Non-leading questions: strip the adjectives and hints out of the question ("great", "isn't it convenient?"). Ask neutrally — otherwise all you collect is an echo of your own view.
Probing technique: peel down to root cause with the 5 Whys; ground abstract complaints by asking "Can you give me a specific example?" Don't stop at the first-layer answer.
Interview quality: when the customer finishes, don't rush in. Let three seconds of silence sit — that's where the truest, most useful line tends to fall out.
一句话In One Line
Asking a question is, at heart, an act of evidence-gathering — you're trying to retrieve the raw, unprocessed truth out of the customer's head.
But humans instinctively want to "be right," and so we unconsciously stuff the answer into the question.
That is exactly where leading questions come from — they make sure you only ever hear yourself.
Each of the four phrasings has its place: open-ended discovers, closed confirms,
the 5 Whys drives to root cause, silence extracts the follow-up — and leading questions, alone, produce only noise.
One sentence to keep — a good question surfaces the customer's world; a bad one surfaces your own shadow.
Common Mistakes
Fishing with leading questions ("Isn't it really easy to use?"). Ask neutrally and open — let the customer answer without your hint baked in.
Running closed-only and collecting a stack of yes/no. Default to open-ended for the story; reserve closed phrasing for nailing down a specific detail at the end.
Jumping in the moment the customer pauses and finishing their sentence for them. Tolerate the silence — three quiet seconds is what pulls out the truest follow-up.
