Origin Story · The Most Profitable Step of a Printer
A company set out to improve its printer. Engineers buried their heads in the "Print" step: faster, sharper, quieter. Then they actually went and sat in customers' homes to watch the whole thing — and found that the meltdown moment wasn't printing at all. It was swapping the cartridge: ink all over the hands, can't line up the slot, no clue how much was left. And then "Dispose": no idea where to throw the old cartridge. So they redesigned a one-click snap-in cartridge and a take-back program, and word of mouth exploded. The lesson is brutal: the step you think customers care about may not be the step that actually hurts them. Only when you draw the whole journey from acquire to dispose does the opportunity start jumping out at you on its own.

Use Maps in the Real World

Use journey: draw the customer's "get it → use it → finish with it" arc as one continuous line, instead of staring at the moment of use.
Spotting opportunities: the seams between stages, the waiting, the confusion — that's where competitors look away and you can make a difference.
Whole lifecycle: acquire and dispose are the most ignored, yet the easiest places to differentiate (easy setup, recyclable, easy to resell).
Mining for pain: go on-site and watch customers actually use it, don't ask "what do you want" — the pain is written on their faces and in their hands.
一句话In One Line
The easiest trap for designers is mistaking yourself for the customer — we know the product, so using it feels obvious. But the real customer's journey is full of friction we don't see: packaging that won't open, switches we can't find, an old unit we can't figure out how to throw away. A use map's value is that it forces you to walk from the customer's first second to their last, and pulls every overlooked moment onto the table. Remember: the biggest opportunity is rarely inside the core feature you've polished, it's inside the "journey seams" nobody wants to deal with.
Common Mistakes
Only mapping the "use" segment and ignoring acquire and dispose. Map the entire lifecycle — differentiation usually hides in the neglected first and last steps.
Sitting in the office and inventing pains from imagination. Go on-site and watch real customers — pain is something you see with your eyes, not conjure in your head.
Collecting a pile of pains and never ranking them. Rank by trough depth and how often it occurs — hit the most painful, most frequent step first.
