Origin Story · Altshuller's Nine Windows
Soviet inventor Genrich Altshuller spent a lifetime combing through hundreds of thousands of patents, hunting for the common moves behind every "genius" invention. He found that mediocre engineers tend to fixate on the part right in front of them, while the real masters keep nine windows open at once: they see the current system, but also its past and future, its internal components and its external environment. Those nine windows became the System Operator — a tool that drags you out of the tunnel vision of "this thing, here, now" and forces you to plot any object on the axes of time and hierarchy. Once you can see the direction of evolution, you know where to invent next.

Nine-Box Thinking in the Real World

System thinking: never look at a part or function in isolation. Who it serves (the supersystem) and what holds it up (the subsystems) decide its real value.
Technology foresight: extrapolate the past-to-present trajectory into the future, see the next generation early, and get there first.
TRIZ tool: the System Operator is the entry-level TRIZ frame. Pair it with the technology evolution trends and "inspiration" turns into a direction you can actually reason about.
Step out of the local: when a problem refuses to budge in one cell, jump to a neighbor (one level up, one generation back) and the answer often shows up — it usually lives somewhere else.
一句话In One Line
The human brain ships with tunnel vision: faced with a problem, instinct locks onto this thing, as it is right now, and the field of view keeps narrowing. The point of the nine-box isn't the nine cells themselves — it's that the grid forces your attention to slide on purpose: one cell back (where did it come from), one forward (where is it heading), one up (what does it serve), one down (what is it made of). Once "spin through the nine cells whenever I see a system" becomes reflex, you stop being a craftsman patching the problem in front of you and become a designer who can see where evolution is going.
Common Mistakes
Filling in only the "present · system" cell and calling it done. The value only appears once all nine cells are open. Drop the time axis or the hierarchy axis and it collapses into a plain description.
Treating the "future" cell as sci-fi self-indulgence. The future should be extrapolated from the real past-to-present trajectory, not pulled out of thin air.
Mixing up the levels and labeling subsystems as supersystems. The subsystem answers "what is it made of"; the supersystem answers "what is it embedded in" — opposite directions.
