Origin Story · The iPhone invented none of its parts
When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in 2007 as "an iPod, a phone, and an Internet communicator," he gave away the trick. Every piece of the iPhone — multi-touch, cellular telephony, the iPod music ecosystem, mobile Internet — already existed. Apple didn't invent a single one of them. What Apple did do was bolt those mature blocks together with surgical fit and wrap them in an experience — and in the process redefined the phone. Economist Brian Arthur, in The Nature of Technology, argues that nearly every new technology is a recombination of existing ones. The key to innovation is rarely "invent a new block" — it's seeing which old blocks, fitted together, will generate far more value than the sum of their parts.

Assembly: blocks → new product

Pick blocks to start

Check the blocks on the left and they'll snap onto the product in the center. Green links mean the two blocks fit well with strong synergy; red links mean poor fit and integration risk. Try assembling the "iPhone" combo.

Is the combo any good? Maturity / Risk / Value

A good combo should be high maturity (off-the-shelf blocks), low risk (the blocks fit), and high value (synergy amplifies). Piling on more blocks that don't fit only pushes risk up and value down.

Technology integration in the real world

Combinatorial innovation: iPhone, Tesla, smart speakers — breakthroughs usually come from new combinations of old tech, not pure invention.
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): score each block on the 1–9 readiness scale and prefer high-TRL, off-the-shelf modules to keep risk low.
Modularity: split the system into modules with clean interfaces so you can swap and recombine them like LEGO bricks.
Integration risk: every block can be mature on its own and still fail in combination — mismatched interfaces and broken synergy are integration's biggest pitfalls.
一句话In One Line
"Innovation = invent something brand-new" is an expensive misconception. Building a block from scratch means low maturity, high risk, long timeline; recombining mature blocks lets you stand on the shoulders of giants — minimum technical risk, maximum product innovation. But more blocks is not always better. The hard part of technology integration isn't "collecting the blocks" — it's making them mesh seamlessly. The graveyard is full of products whose individual modules were mature but whose assembly fell apart. So when you grade a combo, look at each block's maturity, but look harder at how well the blocks fit each other — that's the real gap between an iPhone and any "do-everything phone" that just piled features on top of features.
Common Mistakes
"The more blocks the better." Adding mismatched modules just raises integration risk and dilutes value. Few-and-coherent beats many-and-broken.
Scoring only block-level maturity and ignoring fit. Every block being mature doesn't mean they'll work together. Interfaces and synergy decide whether integration succeeds.
Insisting on inventing every block yourself. If a high-TRL off-the-shelf module fits, don't rebuild it. Save the innovation budget for the "how to combine" layer.
