Origin Story · From Baton to Assembly Line
In the 1930s, the German aircraft industry borrowed the musical term Taktzeit to synchronise assembly lines — at every fixed beat, the whole line moved one station forward.
After World War II, Toyota took the idea further and put it at the heart of Just-In-Time (JIT).
Toyota's key shift was philosophical: stop asking "how fast can we build?" and start asking "how fast does the customer want it?"
Takt translates the customer's demand rate into a drumbeat every operator can hear — "one beat, one piece" — so the whole line breathes in time with the customer.
The Takt Clock: One Beat, One Piece
One full sweep of the hand is one Takt. When the drum hits, the line must hand off one finished piece — the customer's heartbeat, not faster, not slower, perfectly in sync with demand.
Cycle Time vs Takt Line: Who Can't Keep Up
Takt Time in the Real World
Line balancing: pull every cycle time just under Takt — load is even, no one idle, no one drowning.
Capacity tracks demand: when peak season shortens Takt, add headcount or overtime; when Takt stretches, scale back. Resources follow the customer's heartbeat.
Bottleneck spotting: any process whose C/T exceeds Takt is the bottleneck to fix first — leave it alone and it drags the whole line.
Staffing math: required operators ≈ total work content ÷ Takt. The beat sets the headcount.
一句话In One Line
Takt is the one rhythm in lean that is set by the customer, not by the factory. It doesn't care how fast your machines can run — only how often the customer wants a piece.
Run faster than Takt and the surplus turns into inventory waste; run slower, and you get late shipments and lost customers.
So the goal of lean isn't "faster is better" — it's land exactly on Takt, so production breathes in lockstep with the customer.
Pull every C/T just below the Takt line and keep them close together: that is the final yardstick of line balancing.
Common Mistakes
Confusing Takt with cycle time (C/T). Takt is set by customer demand; C/T is the time a process actually takes. You compare them — you don't equate them.
Using full theoretical hours in the numerator. The numerator must be the truly available time — after breaks, maintenance, and changeover come out.
Chasing speed above Takt — over-producing. Beating Takt just builds inventory. Syncing to it exactly is the most economical pace.
