Origin Story · One Book That Explained Toyota to the World
In 1990, James Womack, Daniel Jones, and Daniel Roos coined the word "lean" in The Machine That Changed the World to name what Toyota had been doing. Six years later, Womack and Jones followed up with Lean Thinking, lifting Toyota's practice into five universal principles that hospitals, banks, and software teams could copy. The first four read like operating instructions. The fifth — pursuit of perfection — reads more like philosophy: it admits "perfection is unreachable" and demands "keep walking toward it anyway." That single principle is what turned lean from a toolkit into a culture that refuses to be satisfied — and it is exactly where lean meets the Eastern spirit of kaizen, continuous improvement.

Pursuit of Perfection in the Real World

The five lean principles: from value to perfection, this is a thinking order you can lift wholesale — it works in manufacturing, services, and software alike.
A continuous improvement culture: Toyota receives millions of employee improvement suggestions every year — perfection is built one small step at a time.
Never satisfied: hit the target and it becomes the new baseline. Today's best becomes tomorrow's standard to beat — otherwise the organisation just stands still.
PDCA writ large: the spiral is just PDCA at scale — Plan, Do, Check, Act, lifting higher with every turn.
一句话In One Line
People dismiss "pursue perfection" as a correct-but-empty cliché. It is actually the one principle that keeps the other four alive. Without it, the first four are a one-shot project: define value, draw the value stream, push one wave of flow and pull, done. With it, the loop closes and starts spiralling upward — every revolution exposes fresh waste, and you walk the same five steps again at a higher standard. Perfection is the North Star you never quite reach; the point isn't arrival, it's that the organisation always has a heading and never stands still.
Common Mistakes
Declaring "lean is done" after one round. Lean has no done-state — the fifth principle exists to send the loop back to the start.
Treating "pursue perfection" as a poster on the wall. It has to land as everyday machinery — suggestion systems, retrospectives, rewritten standards.
Skipping "define value" and jumping straight to efficiency. The five principles are ordered: nail what the customer wants first, then talk about flow and perfection.
